Local Government Worker

Local GovernmentLocal Government organisations employ a wide range of lone workers responsible for carrying out a variety of job functions that will frequently face a mixture of social and / or environmental risk.

Many departments within a council will typically have several departments with staff that are lone workers whether it is Housing services, Social services or Environmental services among others. The job roles they fulfil and the risks they face will dictate how they are catered for from a duty of care perspective. An organisation carrying more lone workers obviously carries a greater level of risk in line with that.

Data provided by the Office of National Statistics shows 2,923,000 people employed by local government at Q3 in 2009. Our analysis of this data suggests that at least twenty to twenty five percent are regular lone workers.

Local Government Employers advise that almost thirty five percent of days lost in long-term sickness are attributed to work-related stress ‘which could cost councils around £120 million per year'. It's worth noting, this figure doesn't make any allowance for the cost of lost productivity also, which will also be significant. Equipping staff through regular lone worker training whether it is safety training, conflict resolution or through the training of lone worker managers will improve productivity whilst serving to reduce stress. Employing a solution featuring Identicom or Identicom mobile will also help a worker to raise an alarm to receive help should he or she not be able to resolve a situation cordially.
