Transport & Logistics workers face a variety of risks that require a mixture of lone worker training and technology in order to help them reduce and manage situations effectively.
Employers of lone workers in this sector will often deploy a vehicle tracking system; however from a duty of care perspective this doesn't cover off a myriad of risks to the user. For example, such systems don't cater for when a lone worker is not with the vehicle, it makes no provision should a trip or fall be suffered, and doesn't provide any assistance should a drivers load be stolen. A solution featuring Identicom could provide a lone worker with added assistance should any of the aforementioned potential outcomes become a reality. The product won't stop such incidents, but it does allow a lone worker to respond, record admissible audio evidence and raise the alarm.
There are a significant number of lone workers in this sector with statistics from the Department of Transport in 2009 showing there are over 500,000 Heavy Goods Vehicles on the road in the UK as well as 3,000,000 Light Goods Vehicles. Conservative estimates would suggest at least one million full-time lone workers are employed in this sector, which represents a considerable financial risk to the industry - particularly when ‘Stowaway violence' is on the increase.
TruckPol, the national intelligence unit forming part of the ACPO Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service, stated in their annual report of 2009 there were 1103 thefts from Large Goods Vehicles in 2009, a 7% increase compared with 2008 (These figures now do not include theft of fuel from lorry tanks). The number of violent incidents relating to LGV's did decrease over the same period however, and was recorded at 27 in 2009.
A solution featuring the Identicom t-777 will allow a user to get the most comprehensive lone worker protection featuring a GPS enabled device and automatic ‘Man-Down' protection. The product also integrates with the Mobile Workforce Management Platform giving a lone worker manager a variety of options around viewing user locations to better coordinate a flow of operations.
